Among those actors who never starred but always shone, Barbara Hicks is guaranteed a place. She was at the Royal Court during its ascendant years, and her time at the National Theatre would reflect its own first quarter of a century, from being directed by Laurence Olivier in The Crucible (1965) – for which she had the appropriate Puritan countenance – at the Old Vic, to performing on the South Bank stage named after him, in Alan Ayckbourn's A Small Family Business (1987).

IMI boss Martin Lamb stepped down today from the engineering group after 13 years in the top job. He will be replaced by former Weir Group chief executive Mark Selway on 1 January, before retiring from IMI’s board at its AGM later in the year.

City traders are fickle types, and yesterday the only thing they appeared interested in was stocks that dig up yellow metal. The markets surged after the shock news that the US Federal Reserve will not reduce its current asset purchasing programme – much to the surprise of many who had predicted a tapering of quantitative easing. As the markets took it on board, the dollar weakened and gold, in turn, jumped.
