Arts and Entertainment Fat chance: Xand van Tulleken in ‘Horizon: Sugar vs Fat’

Last night's Horizon (BBC2) pitted the two best food types against each other in "Sugar vs Fat", a battle which – as I flounce towards a chubby middle age – I'm calling as a score draw. They're both brilliant.

Animal instinct: Marina Chapman was the subject of 'Woman Raised By Monkeys'

Woman Raised By Monkeys, National Geographic: Review - an incredible tale that masked a childhood of unspeakable trauma

In April of this year, Marina Chapman, a sixtysomething grandmother from Bradford, published an autobiography in which she made an astonishing claim. She said she had been kidnapped from her family home in Colombia at the age of five and abandoned in the jungle, where she was taken in and raised by a group of capuchin monkeys. Instead of just smiling and nodding politely, like many of the Breakfast TV interviewers did, National Geographic made Woman Raised By Monkeys, a documentary in which their cameras accompanied Marina on a trip to Colombia and attempted to investigate the veracity of her claims.

Harriet Walker: You can eat the pasty, but you know full well that no good can come of it

I joined a gym this month – it's the first I've been to in almost 10 years, and pretty much the first exercise I've done in just as long, apart from the odd dance-floor workout or trot for the bus. And since I joined, I've found the way I approach food has become like that of a hangman contemplating death.

The Ashes 2013-14: England will not go hungry but risk being undercooked as dietary demands are revealed

England’s elaborate dietary demands in pursuit of the Ashes cooked up a hugely entertaining media storm. But they could not quite disguise the fact that the complete world stocks of pumpkin seed and goji berry bars or buckwheat pancake with probiotic yogurt and fresh berries – merely two of the tourists’ extensive list equating to a foodie’s heaven – will be unable to help if they cannot get on the park.
