The Royal Ballet’s latest works are very busy. Wayne McGregor’s glossy Carbon Life is a pop-fashion collaboration with Mark Ronson, Gareth Pugh and a great many pop stars. Liam Scarlett’s Sweet Violets is a mess of bad and good ideas about Walter Sickert, Jack the Ripper and an artist at work. Christopher Wheeldon’s 2001 Polyphonia, which opens the evening, is sleek and just right.
Mark Ronson - Pop's top producer jumps at the ballet
Friday 30 March 2012
Mark Ronson, most famous for his work with Amy Winehouse, has co-created a new dance piece at the Royal Opera. He tells Elisa Bray what attracted him to it
Muhly/De Ridder/Britten Sinfonia, Barbican, London
Monday 19 March 2012
Nico Muhly’s first work for English National Opera was an iffy affair, but he talks a blue streak, and since his collaborators include Bjork, Philip Glass, and sundry indie-rock outfits, nobody could accuse him of not putting himself about. He’s now the go-to classical composer for anyone wanting to associate themselves with cutting-edge New York cool.

Pop, fashion, rap ... it's a polyphonic spree at the ballet
George Michael, State Opera House, Prague
Wednesday 24 August 2011
"I'm totally winging it," George Michael admits. Justifiably, the "Wake Me Up Before You Go Go" singer has the "jitterbugs". It's been a turbulent couple of decades and this is an emotional, confessional gig.
First Night: George Michael - Symphonica Tour, State Opera House, Prague

Album: Mara Carlyle, Floreat (Ancient and Modern)
Sunday 21 August 2011
Unwise as it may be to declare an album is destined to become a classic, I've no reservations in doing so in regard to this long awaited follow-up to The Lovely.
Ten Plagues, Traverse Theatre, Edinburgh
Tuesday 09 August 2011
An account of the London plague is a strong choice of subject for a song cycle, and this Traverse production is already a festival highlight and a triumph for the singer Marc Almond, writer Mark Ravenhill, composer Conor Mitchell and director-designer Stewart Laing.
Rufus Wainwright and Loudon Wainwright III, Royal Opera House, London<br/>John Grant, 100 Club, London
Sunday 24 July 2011
The best of families fall out, but they don't all get a chance to iron out their differences in front of an audience paying hundreds to see the reconciliation
Rufus & Martha Wainwright, Royal Opera House, London
Thursday 21 July 2011
Rarely has there been a more affably erudite performer than Rufus Wainwright. As he cracks a one-liner about Richard Wagner on stage at the Royal Opera House, his sister Martha – with whom he shares the stage tonight – and the crowd chuckle. Moments later, the siblings burst into a cover of Elton John and Kiki Dee's 1976 number one "Don't Go Breaking My Heart", during a performance also including work by Edith Piaf, Leonard Cohen and their late mother, Kate McGarrigle, as well as original material from both Wainwright children. This is not under any circumstances a traditional gig.
