Standing up to be counted: David Baddiel has a new Edinburgh show

Given that David Baddiel's first stand up show for 16 years apparently arose out of an educational talk, the George Square Theatre (a lecture hall for the rest of the year), is a venue match made in heaven. It's also a far cry from the comedian's Wembley Arena days of rock n' roll comedy.

Russell Brand takes on the Westboro Baptist Church

The Westboro Baptist Church, featured on our list of Youtube's Hall of Homophobia Shame, and a shoo-in for prime position on pretty much any other list of despicable views, made headlines again this week with an announcement that they'd be protesting the funerals of the victims of the Sandy Hook shooting.

Move on, definitely nothing to see here. If we all ignore them, they might just go away.

Coldplay will perform at the Paralympics' closing ceremony

Paralympics: Pomp, ceremony... and possibly well-played, Coldplay

After the Olympic opening ceremony superbly managed to showcase the wide and eclectic history of British music, featuring everything from "Chariots of Fire" to Dizzee Rascal, the standard for any future music-related goings on during London 2012 was set very high.

Relationships: The art of a good divorce (hint: write a book)

D-I-V-O-R-C-E, spells out Tammy Wynette, in what is arguably the most famous song about the end of a marriage ever recorded. Wynette may not have actually written the 1968 hit, but anyone familiar with the pained vocal would not be surprised to learn that she had already been divorced twice.

Russell Brand hosting MTV Movie awards

Trending: The MTV Movie Awards is a most colourful cavalcade

If British TV has been dominated by flag-waving this week, across the pond, America's been busy crowning its own royalty at the MTV Movie Awards 2012. Fewer corgis, more Kardashians. But Sunday night's awards (screened last night on MTV UK) managed to have a few moments where the action was suitably red, white and blue hued.

DVD: Fright Night (15)

This perky remake of Tom Holland's 1985 comedy horror benefits from a supremely hammy turn from David Tennant as Peter Vincent, a fruity, leather-trousered Las Vegas magician who rarely keeps his top on.

Being Modern: Arena comedy

You see those two tiny dots in the distance? That's you, that is. Well, it was if "you" were Rob Newman and David Baddiel. Oh, how we chuckled at their "History Today" sketches in the early 1990s. How we roared as they took their shtick to Wembley Arena, becoming the first comedians to fill its 12,000 seats. How we wept when we realised we were sat so far from the stage that they might as well have been sarcastic marionettes.

Sara Pascoe vs the Apocalypse, Pleasance Dome, Edinburgh

The ethereal surrealism and faux-naivete of the comedian and actress Sara Pascoe conjures up comparisons to Noel Fielding, Josie Long and Russell Brand; in other words she's an acquired taste. Her self-deprecating style more than takes this into account and she goes so far as to issue a series of coy disclaimers about her shtick: "This show has something for everyone but no one will enjoy it entirely."
