Frank Parr: Lancashire cricketer and trombonist with George Melly
Wednesday 16 May 2012
If things had worked out differently, Frank Parr could have been one of the great characters of post-war English cricket. An acrobatic wicketkeeper, he caught the eye almost as soon as he appeared in the Lancashire side. At The Oval in 1952, in only his second county match, he was tipped by The Times to be Godfrey Evans' successor in the England side. Herbert Strudwick, England keeper in the 1920s, thought he was very special. The following year Parr came close to being selected for the winter tour of the West Indies.

Albert Falco: Diver who worked with Jacques Cousteau
Thursday 03 May 2012
The underwater films of the late Jacques Cousteau enchanted and entranced several generations of cinema-goers and TV viewers throughout the 1950s, '60s and '70s and played an important part in raising environmental awareness. The diver, Albert Falco, was Cousteau's right-hand man for 37 years and helped make the Oscar-winning documentaries The Silent World in 1956 and World Without Sun in 1964, as well as the celebrated television series The Undersea World Of Jacques Cousteau.
Matthew Norman: The Prime Minister has been exposed as a cocky whippersnapper
Wednesday 02 May 2012
I write in a state of high anticipation a few hours before a scheduled trip, with an officially adolescent family member, to see Avengers Assemble. In this warmly reviewed film, an alliance of Marvel superheroes is formed to save the world from a malevolent Norse god. Iron Man leads an all-star team featuring Thor, Captain America, Hawkeye and the Black Widow, but the figure I expect to find most intriguing is the Hulk. Any character who instantly metamorphoses from a placid, genial man into a raging maniac must have special resonance for the student of Westminster life.
