Gary Neville posts a song of the day to his social network followers each morning, and on Saturday it was Paul Weller's "Brand New Start". It is beginning to feel as if this is just such a thing for England, even though it felt faintly Engelbert Humperdinck to be taking a very flat 4-4-2 into Europe on Saturday night.

No Mersey: Jay Spearing has had to compete with big-money signings

Spearing brings long-awaited local colour to the Reds

Merseyside loves a local boy, which is one reason why the 23-year-old Jay Spearing has become a popular addition to Liverpool's first-team squad. His style of play as something of a latter-day Sammy Lee appeals too, tenacity and determination matching that of those more established local heroes Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher. So all in all, many fans would be more than happy to see the Wallesey boy starting in the FA Cup final ahead of expensive imports such as Jordan Henderson and the injured Charlie Adam.

Jonas Olsson
If James Collins is sold to Tottenham or QPR, both of whom are reportedly interested in signing the centre-back, Villa will look to prise Swedish defender Jonas Olsson from neighbours West Bromwich Albion. According to The Sun, Olsson has reportedly failed to agree a new contract with the Baggies. But Olsson may be against joining Villa on the grounds of ambition after he told the Swedish press: 'My dream is to play for a club that fights for titles.'
