The September scourge of unreliable weather may yet play a part in determining a County Championship that has the potential to provide another close finish. None of today's matches escaped interruption, with First Division leaders Durham suffering the biggest frustration.
Saturday 07 September 2013
After the first match of England’s one-day international series against Australia at Headingley was declared a washout yesterday afternoon, it was left to the County Championship to fill centre stage. A deluge overnight and throughout the morning meant that the likelihood of any play was quickly dashed, with the sides due to reconvene at Old Trafford tomorrow.

As the big beast of the Premier League is released from its cage once again, it's all too easy to forget that football is simply about a bunch of boys (or girls) chasing a ball around, not pampered heroes and image rights. Bowler of the day Is there a better bowler in county cricket than Graham Onions? Statistically, the Sussex duo, Steve Magoffin and Chris Jordan, are leading the way this season, both passing the milestone of 50 first-class wickets in the match with Derbyshire. But they have only done what Onions has been doing year-on-year in a career in which he now has more than 400 first-class wickets following his 7 for 62 as Middlesex were dismissed for 168 at Lord's. Indeed, it is his favourite ground – outside his home patch at Chester-le-Street – having now taken 42 wickets from eight matches. The battle between Onions and Steven Finn, his England rival, has made for an intriguing sub-plot. Each dismissed the other, Finn getting Onions in both Durham's innings.

Australia have a spring in their step and a song in their heart. This is not only because they have arrived in Worcester where, in days of yore, their tours traditionally began and Don Bradman usually scored a hundred beneath the cathedral.
Saturday 29 June 2013
An early term report on Australia’s progress might say: “Good, room for improvement, none for complacency.” The tourists are steamrollering Somerset in the first match of the Ashes tour but Somerset have suffered similar crushings already this season by their Championship peers.
