I survived! I'm back from V Festival, a little sunburned, a little tired, but still, essentially, alive. And my bank balance doesn't look too bad either. In fact, during the entire time I was inside the festival, I managed – almost – to avoid spending entirely. I bought one coffee, three bottles of not inexpensive diet coke, some chips and a chocolate bar. Not the healthiest of weekends, admittedly, but not the most expensive, either.

It was the August bank holiday. The rain was going from drizzle to downpour and as I peeped out of my weather-beaten tent to survey the landscape at the Reading Festival, the last thing I wanted was another cereal bar. Or another Babybel, another bag of crisps – or any of the other provisions I'd so frugally packed the Friday before. So half an hour later I found myself sitting opposite an infinitely more appealing plate of grilled halloumi, rocket, aubergine and roast peppers, accompanied by a hefty wedge of focaccia.

To the untrained eye it looks like a picture of an empty Jacuzzi, taken on a phone camera that went off accidentally. It is, in fact, one of a series of shots taken by the award-winning rapper Dizzee Rascal as part of his new creative impulse.

Fans of the likes of Eminem, Arctic Monkeys, Rihanna, The Strokes, My Chemical Romance and Muse have been targeted by unscrupulous conmen this week. The bands are among the headlining acts at this year's summer festivals, in Leeds and Reading and the V Festivals in Chelmsford and Staffordshire. The line-ups were announced at the same time as tickets went on sale.
