October 2 - Steve McClaren (Nottm Forest)
Former England manager Steve McClaren lasted just 112 days at this historic club, although his departure was no great surprise. Forest represented McClaren's first job in English football since his disastrous reign of the national team was brought to an end. Yet quickly things didn't look rosy at the City Ground amid reports of unrest when McClaren was unable to bring in new players during the summer transfer window. McClaren oversaw six defeats in 10 Championship games, the last result being a 3-1 home defeat to Birmingham City. After the match the club announced his resignation, and said he would not be seeking compensation.

Forlan moves to Inter, but rest of Europe quiet on transfer D-day

The madness of the transfer window appears not to afflict continental Europe quite as virulently as England and there were few major deals concluded this week. Diego Forlan's €5m (£4.43m) switch from Atletico Madrid to Internazionale was the most eye-catching, with Inter also taking former Birmingham striker Mauro Zarate from Lazio on loan.

From the wurst to the best: A cutting-edge chef is putting Germany on the world gastronomic map

When contemplating potential culinary destinations, Germany might not be the first place that springs to mind. Spain; Italy; France; Greece; Asia; the Middle East and now even Scandinavia are all vying for the attention of the hungry traveller, but Germany, which is still reeling from the worst E. coli outbreak in its history, is not exactly known for its national cuisine. Ask most foodies what they associate with German dining and it's more than likely to include images of soggy sauerkraut and lurid wurst than delectable fine dining. For many, contact with German food is limited to the annual roll out of German Christmas markets peddling vats of acrid cabbage and farty frankfurters, served by grown men in lederhosen.
