Las Ventanas Al Paraiso, Baja California

I am an expert on tequila. Or so my Tequila Aficionado Certificate proclaims. There aren't many posh hotels where you can attend a tequila seminar in between a relaxing Ayurvedic massage and Jeep trip into the desert to watch the sunset. OK, as seminars go, it probably wasn't the most taxing or rigorously educational – it only lasted about half an hour and was held in the Ceviche Bar (that's marinated raw fish – goes very well with tequila). But I can now tell my oak-aged from the rips-the-roof-of-your-mouth-off variety. And I can also whip up a rather tasty little chaser.

Las Ventanas al Paraiso (that's windows on to paradise) is a mix of Mediterranean and Mexican architectural styles built around a serpentine string of infinity pools that blend seamlessly into the ocean. Rather like a grand old hacienda, it's all white stucco, adobe walls and huge candelabra-style cacti. The hotel is perched on the tip of Baja California, the spindly 1,000-mile long peninsula that hangs down from California – and the paradise it looks out on to is the Sea of Cortez (after the 16th-century Spanish explorer) which separates Baja from mainland Mexico.

Location, location, location

Las Ventanas Al Paraiso, Cabo San Lucas, San Jose del Cabo, Baja California Sur 23400 Mexico (00 52 624 144 0300, www.lasventanas.com).

Time to international airport: 20 minutes from San Jose del Cabo airport.

Are you lying comfortably?

Yes, and aromatically. You can request one of four aromatherapy blends with your turn down. The resort has 60 suites, and all come with telescopes for stargazing and whale-watching. My oceanfront junior suite had an open fireplace, walk-in marble shower, huge Jacuzzi and limestone floors.

Freebies: tequila – complete with almonds to munch and salt and lime. Every night a present is also left on your bed: a book on tequila; a small pottery figurine; a bottle of Damiana, a local liqueur and speciality of Baja (and aphrodisiac).

Keeping in touch: satellite TV, direct-dial telephone and internet access.

The bottom line

Gardenview Jr suites cost from $575 (£367) per night. With Western & Oriental (020-7313 6600) seven nights plus flights costs from £2,770.

I'm not paying that: The Finisterra (00 52 624 143 3333, www.finisterra.com) in Cabo San Lucas has rooms from $140 (£89).
