The Red Snowshoe, British Columbia

A B&B with a difference: White Tail is a spacious prospector tent on a rural farm in the Kootenays. Sleeping just two guests, it offers all manner of creature comforts – Siberian goose-down pillows and duvet, plaid flannel bedding, a wood-burning stove... and Wi-Fi. There's a separate bathhouse and hearty breakfasts are served in the farmhouse. A nearby swimming hole beckons on hot summer days.

Sundance Lodges, Alberta

This Rocky Mountains campsite grew from a single tepee, which owners Sheryl and Brian Green bought in the 1980s. With the aim of offering accommodation to either travellers without tents or the budget to stay in hotels, Sundance now comprises traditional Sioux tepees and trapper's tents that are decked out with wooden floors, beds, lanterns, a heater and outside space for cooking and campfires. Tent pitches and RV sites are also available.

WildExodus, Ontario

Canada's Boreal forest covers almost two thirds of the country, reaching from Newfoundland across to the Yukon. In a section of Ontario's woodland, adventure specialist Wild Exodus offers a luxury camping experience in Wawaitin Falls Park. The camp of fully furnished tents is let out to one group of four to 12 guests for a week at a time. Arrive by canoe and spend the week swimming in the rivers and lakes, picking berries and discovering the local wildlife.

Huttopia, Québec

The Huttopia concept was born in France 12 years ago, introducing campers to unspoilt wilderness via low-impact but comfortable timber huts, tents and roulottes (caravans). Now Huttopia's A-frame tents are available in Canada, with sites in 14 of Québec's national parks among wildlife and stunning scenery. Explore fjordal landscapes in Saguenay, lakes and forests in Frontenac, bay islands in Bic or mountains in Gaspesie or Mont Tremblant.

Solstua West, British Columbia

This Discovery Islands campsite delivers "nature in comfort", with expansive, plump beds that look out on to the Calm Channel and the surrounding temperate rainforest from their sturdy tent surroundings. With few inhabitants at this end of the Strait of Georgia, the lure is the peace and solitude; most visitors come for salmon fishing and stunning fjordal views. Bear watching, kayaking, walking and sailing are other diversions.

Clayoquot Wilderness, British Columbia

The main concession to camping is the canvas that separates you from the outdoors. The prospector-inspired tents offer under-floor heating in ensuite bathrooms, antique furniture, "modern natural cuisine" in the restaurant and spa tents where you can unwind with holistic therapies. The biggest draw is the setting, at the mouth of a nine-mile fjord surrounded by a forest and hot springs.
