The Carneros wine-growing region is known for its pinot noirs, chardonnay, sparkling wines and the stylish Carneros Inn. Set in the cool southern Napa Valley, it's flanked by farms, orchards and vines. This upscale Napa retreat offers round-the-clock indulgence, whether it's a breakfast of lemon and ricotta pancakes, a dip in the pool with Palisade Mountain views, cycle touring the local vineyards (Cuvaison and Clos Pegase are both nearby) or unwinding in the extensive spa where mud treatments are inspired by Calistoga's hot spring mud baths. Duchamp Hotel, California

Sonoma's rolling hills make an appealing alternative to the broad Napa Valley, and the wine capital here is Healdsburg. One of the town's hippest addresses is the Duchamp Hotel, which has its own syrah-growing winery and six stylish poolside bungalows.

The Greenporter, New York State

The Hamptons have long held the Long Island spotlight, but now attention is turning to the North Fork at the eastern extremity of the island and its burgeoning wine scene. At the gateway to the wineries and fishing villages of the North Fork are the village of Greenport and the mid-century style Greenporter Hotel. Here, La Cuve restaurant serves many of the locally produced wines alongside organic and Long Island produce. It also hosts special wine evenings such as a Lebanese dinner paired with Paumanok wines.

The Allison is a luxurious base from which to explore Oregon's Willamette Valley. The hotel is decorated in earthy shades and has its own working vineyard. The Jory restaurant is named after the soil that produces Oregon's pinot noirs.
