The first of the Express By Holiday Inn chain to appear in Hong Kong, the hotel moved to its present 28-storey building two years ago, and its low prices and comprehensive amenities have earned it the accolade of Hong Kong’s Budget Hotel of the Year twice running. The group is planning to expand its Hong Kong presence in the near future. The functional, no-frills property is enhanced by six independently- owned restaurants between the second and sixth floors, ranging from traditional Chinese to French, and a takeaway breakfast service is available for guests.

Other useful facilities are an ironing room on the 11th floor, and a four-terminal internet room in the lobby, which guests can use free of charge.

LOCATION 33 Sharp Street East, Causeway Bay, Hong Kong (00 852 3558 6688; www.expressbyholidayinn.com.cn). Directly across the road from the glossy Times Square mall, the hotel is at the heart of one of Hong Kong Island’s premier shopping and commercial districts, where many multi-national companies are based. Times Square’s attractions include Lane Crawford, Hong Kong’s equivalent of Selfridges, and the city’s largest branch of the stylish Japanese department store, Sogo. The refreshing greenery of Victoria Park is a 10-minute walk away, east of the Causeway Bay MTR station. Timeto international airport: 45 minutes by taxi; 30 minutes by rail.

COMFORTABLE? It features the standard, reassuringly familiar Holiday Inn lay-out, right down to the double room size of precisely 23 square metres. There’s an adequate workspace area, and most of the rooms have double sofa beds which can accommodate a third adult. All 269 rooms have a fridge, safe, air conditioning, power shower in the bathroom and separate WC. Freebies: Toothbrush, toothpaste, shower cap and tissues. Keeping in touch: Direct dial phones, free broadband internet (via cable) in the rooms, and satellite TV with BBC World.

THE BOTTOM LINE Double rooms, including set breakfast, cost from HK$980 (£63) per night in low season, which includes internet access, rising to HK$1,580 (£100) in high season.

OTHER BUDGET OPTIONS The recently refurbished Eaton Hotel (380 Nathan Road, Hong Kong; 00 852 2782 1818; www.eatonhotel.com) has standard double rooms, without breakfast, from HK$1,100 (£70). Double rooms at the Evergreen Guesthouse (48Woo Sung Street, Kowloon; 00 852 2780 4222; www.evergreenhotel.com) start at HK$600 (£39) per night, not including breakfast.
