After a 14-year hiatus, BA is about to resume flights from Heathrow to the South Korean capital. The airline scrapped the link in 1998, but from 2 December, it joins Korean Air (from Heathrow and Gatwick) and Asiana (from Heathrow) in offering connections to one of Asia's great megacities.

Six new flights a week means a greater opportunity for British travellers to enjoy the "Eight Great Gates" that fold a fortified arm around the city , itself a maze of modern skyscrapers, where thriving commerce and charming neighbourhoods combine.

Roam the resplendent royal palaces (Gyeongbok and Changdeok are two of the best), take in traditional hanok houses in the Bukchon district and meander amid the city's many markets.

For an authentic end to the day, organise a homestay through the Korean Tourist Board (00 82 2 729 9460; visitkorea.or.kr). Nightly rates start at W50,000 (£30)per person, B&B.
