The Atomium
Saturday, 6 September 2008
An iconic structure and exhibition space, the Atomium is celebrating its 50th birthday this year with a host of commemorative events.
Brussels' answer to the Eiffel Tower looks like something out of a sci-fi movie but was, in fact, built in 1958 for the Brussels World Fair, which was the first major world exhibition after World War II. With its huge spheres of stainless steel linked by tubes, it represents an iron crystal magnified 165 billion times.
Although originally intended as a temporary creation, it became a much-loved city and Belgian landmark and was recently reopened after extensive renovations. Take the lift to the restaurant at the top and enjoy the spectacular views of the city, then wander around the spheres to see the changing shows and displays.
The Atomium is in the north-west of the city, near Heysel metro station. Call 00 32 2 475 47 75 or see www.atomium.be to find out more.
