Mama Shelter , Saint-Blaise

Converted from a multi-storey car park, this big new budget hotel is owned by the family behind Club Med and is designed by Philippe Starck. The concrete-walled, graffiti-carpeted bedrooms are fairly no-frills but they do come with free Wi-Fi and Kiehl's toiletries. The main draw is the hotel's funky bar-restaurant. The catch? It's in the out-of-the-way 20th arrondissement, a 10-minute walk to the nearest Métro.

Mama Shelter, 109 rue de Bagnolet, 75020 Paris (00 33 1 43 48 48 48; mamashelter.com). Doubles start at €89 (£74), room only

Hotel Mayet, Les Invalides

Don't forget your sunglasses when you're checking into this bright and breezy hotel in Les Invalides. With its rainbow-splashed reception area and red and grey bedrooms, this isn't the best place to wake up with a hangover. The overall effect is rather like Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen let loose in a student hall of residence, but it does offer clean, fun rooms, friendly service and great value.

Hôtel Mayet, 3 rue Mayet, 75006 Paris (00 33 1 47 83 21 35; mayet.com). Doubles start at €120 (£100), with breakfast. Closed 21-28 December

The Five Hotel, Latin Quarter

You get a lot of bang for your buck in this Latin Quarter hotel. Its distinctive, sharply styled rooms feature the work of renowned lacquer-artist Isabelle Emmerique. Other design quirks include a fragrance menu (choose one of five scents for your room) and sparkly fibre-optic lighting. Free Wi-Fi is also thrown in.

The Five Hotel, 3 rue Flatters, 75005 Paris (00 33 1 43 31 74 21; thefivehotel.com). Doubles start at €119 (£99), room only

Le General, Le Marais

A grown-up take on the budget boutique hotel, Le Général is part of a small chain that caters for travellers looking for contemporary style without breaking the bank. The service can be a little too-cool-for-school, but there's no arguing with its classily designed rooms (with L'Occitane products) and chic location. There's also a bar, gym and sauna.

Le Général, 5-7 rue Rampon, 75011 Paris (00 33 1 47 00 41 57; legeneralhotel.com). Doubles start at €175 (£145), room only

Hotel Beaumarchais, Bastille

The citrus-hued rooms at this Oberkampf bolthole may feel slightly dated on the style front, but they are a step up from the budget norm. And, with free Wi-Fi, satellite TV, and the buzzy, nightlife-packed location, they're a steal.

Hôtel Beaumarchais, 3 rue Oberkampf, 75011 Paris (00 33 1 53 36 86 86; hotelbeaumarchais.com). Doubles start at €110 (£92), room only
