History, luxury and charm await at these Turkish delights

Macakizi, Bodrum

Macakizi's rooms and suites spill down a hillside to the chic beach clubs of Turkbuku on the Turkish Riviera. Here, wooden walkways float over the crystal water of the Aegean. The hotel's rooms are dotted about small cubic houses and are white and bright, with pale wood floors, Turkish rugs, flat-screen TVs and contemporary furniture. Guests can unwind in the gardens and hammam or take a dip in the sea from the private waterside terrace.

Serinn house, Cappadocia

Opened last year in the heart of Turkey's cave country, Serinn House is one of Cappadocia's most stylish hotels. The five rooms were created from the volcanic rock by a renowned Turkish architect and feature striking contemporary decor: graphic rugs, sheepskins and one-off pieces of furniture. Home-baked treats are served for breakfast on the terrace, with traditional fare later on in the day.

Gulevi, Safranbolu

Gulevi is in the historic Black Sea town of Safranbolu, feted for its well-preserved Ottoman architecture. The 200-year-old hotel has been similarly restored. Surrounded by flower-strewn gardens, its 10 elegant stone-walled rooms are warmed by wood panels and sumptuous furniture. Traditional Anatolian dishes are served in the dining room.

W IStanbul, Istanbul

The W landed in Istanbul last spring and brought with it the chain's reputation for style and decadence: swanky rooms, a Bliss spa and a signature restaurant by Jean-Georges Vongerichten. It is set in a series of restored 19th-century houses, but inside it's unmistakably modern with bright colours and sleek furnishings.

Dionysos hotel, Kumlubük Bay

The Dionysos was built to match its impressive setting on the Bozburun Peninsula. Rooms are dotted among wild gardens, olive groves and vineyards. There's an infinity pool overlooking the hotel's beach club below, with sun loungers, watersports in the day and a romantic restaurant at night. The food is organic, with olive oil produced on the estate.
