Outside, Just Soh looks like a traditional Alpine lodge. Inside, it's one of a new generation of boutique chalets

Just Soh couldn't look more Alpine, from the outside. But don't expect to find gingham tablecloths inside this converted farmhouse in Les Allues. This is one of a new generation of chalets that takes its lead from the boutique hotel and borrows a bit of the gastro-pub vibe. We're talking comfy leather sofas, luxurious bathrooms and wholesome food. It's a Zen-style retreat with an urban spa feel where every detail has been carefully considered, from the bed linen from Shanghai to the cup of tea outside your room every morning.

The location

Les Allues is a 10-minute drive from Méribel. (There's a free chauffeur service.) It's a classic mountain village with old stone buildings and a handful of bars and restaurants.

The comfort factor

A lot of thought has gone into the six bedrooms. The beds with their five-star linen are meltingly comfortable. Each room has a TV with DVD/CD player and entertainment library of films, books, board games and Xbox games. The cosiest rooms are on the top floor with windows set in the sloping roof. Down in the shared living room, set around the open fire, large leather sofas and giant floor cushions cradle tired limbs. Or you can relax in the Jacuzzi.

The bathroom

En-suites are fitted with bath, shower, Molton Brown and a welcome pack that includes a piste map and lip balm. Slippers, robes and bath salts complete the mini-spa feel.

The food and drink

Eat breakfast and dinner communally at the long dining table. There's an honesty bar in the living room with soft drinks, spirits and retro English sweets. Tea and cakes every afternoon.

The people

Urbanites who long for the slopes but don't want to be parted from their creature comforts. British staff Mel and Justine run the chalet, and Sam the chauffeur is on hand to help.

The area

Les Allues is linked to Méribel by a gondola, which is in turn linked to the Trois Vallées, the world's largest linked ski area. A pass enables you to ski over to Courchevel and Val Thorens, giving access to all 328 runs. Méribel also has an ice rink, climbing wall, bowling alley and lively après-ski scene.

The access

Children are welcome, though facilities for infants are limited. There is one family room with a double bed and two bunks.

The damage

From £550 per person for a week, or £330 for a long weekend, including transfers, breakfasts and some dinners.

The address

Just Soh at La Grange, Chemin de l'Octroi, Méribel Les Allues, 73550 (00 33 4 79 00 58 83; justsoh.com).
