Hip hostel chain Generator expanded into Paris this spring, taking over a derelict office block about 15 minutes' walk from Gare du Nord. The shared bedrooms are spacious with wooden floors, bunk beds and bucket chairs. There are also private rooms, some of which have terraces. The common room features Chesterfield sofas, Moroccan-inspired rugs and a ping-pong table. The bars and cafés of Canal St-Martin are a short stroll away.

Hôtel Arvor, Saint-Georges SoPi

If it's views you're after, be sure to ask for a fifth-floor room here – some of them look out at the Eiffel Tower. But if you can't see the landmark from your window, you can make do with picturesque Parisian rooftops instead. Inside, the hotel is simple, but chic, with statement prints, feature walls and a mix of antique and modern furniture. Pick a book from the shelves and curl up on the communal sofa, or head into SoPi (South Pigalle) to explore this newly stylish neighbourhood.

Hôtel Jeanne d'Arc, Marais

This recently renovated hotel is in the heart of the hip Marais district, with its vintage stores and small-scale museums and galleries. It's wedged between the elegant Place des Vosges – Paris's oldest square – and bustling Rue des Rosiers, the heart of the Jewish Quarter. Some of the Jeanne d'Arc's brightly decked-out bedrooms can sleep up to four guests, while in the breakfast room you can tuck into fresh bread and croissants from a local bakery.

The Five Hotel, Quartier Latin

With star-studded ceilings and flickering fires, the Five Hotel is just the place for hunkering down on a cold night. Hotel Mayet, St-Germain

Paris's 6th arrondissement was once a hub for philosophers and writers, and now it has another creative addition. Decorated with graffiti-style murals and large works of art, Hotel Mayet has 24 bedrooms. These range from compact singles to the Comfort Apartments, which sleeps four and has its own kitchen. The Loft Hostel, Belleville

This new boutique hostel is almost as vibrant as bohemian and multicultural Belleville, the neighbourhood in which it's located. Geometric patterns, and touches of luminous colour decorate the walls of the private twins, doubles and dorms. The hostel, which has a no-children rule, also has a bar and is well-placed for visiting Père-Lachaise cemetery and Edith Piaf's former home.
