The Big Six: Hotels in breweries

The Augustine Hotel, Prague

Seven buildings combine to form the Augustine Hotel, including a 13th-century monastery, a section of which is still inhabited by monks. The handsome design comes courtesy of Olga Polizzi – vaulted ceilings and original doors sit alongside classic furnishings and muted colours. Underground, the St Thomas brewery houses the Brewery Bar, complete with stalagmites, stalactites and a menu of Czech beers.

Hotel du Vin, Henley-on-Thames

The heritage of this handsome Georgian building is worn with pride: "Henley Brewery" is still emblazoned across the brick wall of the former Brakspears Brewery. Inside is a study in Hotel du Vin chic, with original features (factory windows and timber rafters) interspersed with sleek fittings, such as roll-top baths, and tactile fabrics. The suites are named after champagne and port houses and some feature balconies and outdoor bathtubs with views of the Thames.

Fairfield Inn & Suites, Baltimore

Built in 1787, Claggett's Brewery was a testament to Baltimore's biggest industry. The site was later used by the Baltimore Brewing Company for DeGroen's beer and more recently has seen a completely different incarnation as the Fairfield Inn hotel. As well as preserving its heritage, the hotel has gone a step further by using original features such as the grain silo and brewing tanks to harvest rainwater, bolstering its claim to be "Baltimore's First Green Hotel".

The Kerry Hotel, Shanghai

Shanghai is home to the first of Shangri-La's new "lifestyle hotel" brand, Kerry. The glittering skyscraper is part of the Pudong district's high-rise cityscape and features Brew, a bar with an in-house brewery producing six craft beers and a cider.

The Montcalm, London

This luxurious address soft-opened last month on the Grade II-listed site of the former Whitbread brewery. Dating back to the mid-18th century, it now offers sleek bedrooms with high-spec fittings, alongside a collection of Heritage Brewery Suites with original fireplaces and architraves. There is also a gastro pub.

Factory Hotel, Münster

The former Germania brewery has been given a new lease of life. The interiors are modern, with concrete, pale wood flooring and white walls throughout. Livening things up are two bars, Spanish and German restaurants and a nightclub in the basement of the original brewery.
