The Fox & Anchor, Smithfield
The latest venture of the Hotel du Vin and Malmaison group is this Victorian pub, next to Smithfield meat market. At the pewter-topped bar, real ales are served on tap, while hearty food (pies, steak, fish and chips) can be enjoyed amid the wood panelling and brass of the pub's main room. The bedrooms are more contemporary, with velvet soft furnishings, smart baths and striking photography of the London landmarks after which each of them is named.

The Alma, Wandsworth
The Alma has been a favoured local for years, but has just bolstered its appeal to visitors with 23 stylish bedrooms. Lavishly decorated with vivid Osborne & Little wallpapers and free-standing baths, the rooms also share the use of a walled garden. The three highest suites feature floor-to-ceiling windows. In the pub and dining room, an extensive wine list and modern British menu keep standards high. Use of a local spa and gym is available to guests.

The Rose & Crown, Stoke Newington
A family-run pub, The Rose and Crown sits in the midst of Stoke Newington Church Street's independent shops and eateries and is adjacent to St Mary's Church and Clissold Park. A rooftop patio with sun loungers adds appeal during the summer, but when you want to snuggle up, there are half a dozen bedrooms offering contemporary décor, flat-screen televisions and free-standing baths in the larger rooms. The bar serves snacks and meals throughout the week and a traditional roast on Sundays.

The Grazing Goat, Marylebone
This pub takes its name from the first Lady Portman, who was allergic to cow's milk and so kept goats on the land on which the pub now stands. The sleek gastropub is painted in muted blues and greys with oak panelling and mounted deer heads. The eight bedrooms follow a similar aesthetic, and have Wi-Fi and flat-screen TVs.

York & Albany, Camden
Eighteen months ago, Gordon Ramsay's foray into the hotel business saw him restoring this coaching inn overlooking Regent's Park and opening it as a restaurant with rooms. The 10 Regency-styled bedrooms sit above a restaurant, bar and deli.

The Orange, Pimlico
This mid-19th century Belgravia pub was restored from its stucco-embellished exterior to the elegant Victorian interior. The designers have gone for a "shabby château" look in the four en suite bedrooms, with rattan head-boards and dusky hues. Downstairs, the gastropub serves a rustic, seasonal menu that includes wood-fired pizzas.
