Its rainy, it’s cold, and you haven’t seen daylight for weeks as you shuffle in semi-darkness from home to the office.
Winter has taken its toll on your mood and your waistline, and you’re generally feeling out of sorts. In this situation, holidays to Spain can feel like a million miles away, but in fact a bit of winter sun may be the thing to brighten you up and give you something to look forward to as we edge slowly towards spring. Better still, the quieter streets during the off-peak season are brilliant for exploring, as for once you don’t have to battle through endless crowds to get around your chosen resort. But where to go?
For a city break with a lively edge, Barcelona can’t be beaten. With friendly locals and a fantastic range of attractions this metropolitan destination incorporates all the usual ‘city’ things to do (galleries, restaurants, etc.), but also incorporates all the classic hallmarks of a beach holiday: markets for souvenir shopping, cheap cafés and plenty of golden sand.
Even in winter the city is pretty warm, and locals are welcoming to tourists eager to find out more about their city. Holidays to Barcelona are popular with those who like plenty to do while they’re away, and the numerous tours, monuments and historical sights are sure to keep you busy. To get away from it all, head to Barceloneta beach to relax and get a sneaky winter tan, strolling along the beachfront boardwalk to the nearest tapas restaurant when it all gets too much.
Winter is a time to let the diet go a little and enjoy life more. When you’re hidden under multiple layers the state of your abs is often far from your mind, so for those looking to take advantage of this and get stuck into some fabulous food should try Seville for gastronomic heaven. As the main birthplace of tapas Seville has plenty of restaurants offering traditional snacks, as well as smaller versions of main courses should you wish to try a variety of dishes. Food is a big part of Seville’s culture: fresh figs, seafood and cheeses are all staples, so get ready to loosen the belt and indulge a little during your time here.
For a family-friendly holiday, Tenerife offers plenty for all age groups, with everything from volcanoes to lush greenery and some stunning beaches. Watersports are very popular across the islands, with surfing, water-skiing and kite surfing being favourites among tourists and locals. Scuba diving is also popular, and plenty of instructors and schools offer lessons specifically tailored for younger learners or beginners.
One thing about holidays to Tenerife is that they tend to be very active: with so much stunning scenery and wildlife, it seems a shame to not get out and explore the local area. However, the island is also very family-oriented, and there are plenty of attractions to occupy younger children. Loro Parque Zoo boasts a huge range of animals to capture kids’ imaginations, as well as having a useful education centre to teach animal conservation. The Karting Club in Playa de las Americas is also worth a visit, especially for competitive dads eager to prove who’s boss!
Sunshine holidays are usually thought to be the preserve of the summer, but in fact winter sun can be an excellent way of getting through the colder months. Better still, prices are likely to be lower on flights and accommodation, meaning that you should be able to pick up a bargain easily. As the temperature drops and the increasing feeling of cabin fever begins to take hold, take a well-deserved trip to warmer shores as an antidote to those heavy winter blues;get ready to flaunt your unseasonably healthy tan.
