Airports to avoid this Thanksgiving weekend

Online travel booking site Orbitz has warned travelers of potential delays at Chicago O'Hare this Thanksgiving weekend, naming it the busiest airport in the United States.

Thanksgiving weekend is one of the busiest travel periods of the year, with over 24 million travelers expected to take to the skies domestically to visit friends and family, and a surge also expected in international arrivals.

Chicago O'Hare International is predicted to handle 20 percent more traffic than the next busiest airport, Los Angeles International, between November 23 and November 29, easily topping the list of the busiest airports in the United States around that weekend.

Boston Logan is predicted to be the third busiest and New York's LaGuardia is in fourth place.

For less busy alternatives, Orbitz recommends Akron/Canton Regional Airport in Ohio as the least busy, followed by Oakland International in California and Dane County Regional Airport in Madison, Wisconsin.

Tips for travelers to help a journey go smoothly include traveling light to save time with baggage, checking in online, making sure bags are prepared for security checkpoints and building buffers into a journey to help mitigate the impact of delays that can - and well may - occur.
