Boeing's new Dreamliner performs near-verticle take off - video

Aircraft maker Boeing has shown its latest model, the Dreamliner 787-9, performing a near-vertical take off during a test flight over Washington state in the USA.

The new Dreamliner is six metres shorter than its original counterpart and can carry up to 335 passengers, an increase of 55 from the older model. According to Boeing, the aircraft also uses 20 per cent less fuel.

Ahead of the Paris Air Show, Boeing were obviously feeling fairly smug about their new model's credentials and unveiled a video of the impressive plane performing what appears to be an almost 90 degree take off.

However, 767 pilot Patrick Smith told CNN, "Some of what you're seeing on takeoff is a trick of perspective. It looks like the takeoff is at a near vertical 90 degree angle -- trust me it's not."

The video goes on to show the Dreamliner flying above Moses Lake, Washington.

The Dreamliner 787-9 will be delivered to its first customer, New Zealand Airlines, in 2016. The next model, the 787-10, is scheduled for service in 2018.
