Easyjet adds Birmingham airport flights

No-frills airline easyJet is to start operations at a thirteenth UK airport later this year, it emerged today.

Birmingham International Airport confirmed that the Luton-based carrier will begin services to Geneva and the French city of Grenoble in December.

EasyJet's regional general manager for the UK, David Osborne, said the new routes would capitalise on demand from Midlands-based winter sports enthusiasts.

"EasyJet's expansion from Birmingham International Airport is great news for skiers from the Midlands, giving them more choice and a brand new service to Grenoble.

"They now have the opportunity to fly to the major ski gateways for the French and Swiss Alps."

Mr Osborne added: "Our expansion in Birmingham reflects our commitment to growth across the UK - we recognise the strong demand for low fares with convenience and Birmingham's great potential."

The addition of Birmingham to the easyJet network takes the number of European airports it operates between to 79.

Peter Vella, the business development director at Birmingham airport, expressed hope that easyJet would expand its operations in the West Midlands.

"We're delighted to welcome easyJet to Birmingham and offer our passengers a brand new service to Grenoble and increased services to Geneva," he said.

The new daily service to Geneva, with one-way fares starting at £22.99, will commence on December 14.

The twice-weekly Grenoble flight, with one-way prices from £24.99, begins on December 22.
