World travellers do not rate UK hotels very highly, according to a poll today.
Just two UK hotels made it into the top 79 in a table of the globe's best hotels compiled by online travel company Expedia.
And there were only 10 UK hotels in the top 424 in the best-rated world hotel list which was based on more than one million travellers' opinions.
Most highly-placed UK hotel was The Chester Grosvenor and Spa in Cheshire which was 11th in the global list, first among UK hotels and fourth-best in Europe.
The only other hotel in the top 79 world list was the Radisson Blu in Durham which was second in the UK list and 33rd in the world list.
The third-highest UK hotel was the Renaissance Chancery Court in Bloomsbury, north London, which was in 80th place in the world list.
Top world hotel was the Galaxy Iraklio in Crete, with the Hide Away Guest House on the Garden Route in Knysna, South Africa, in second place.
The world list included properties in 1,022 locations, with 40% being in Europe, 30% in the USA and 30% elsewhere.
