1.Screen test

Travellers heading to New York City this summer can take advantage of a host of free, open-air cinema screenings. In August, films include The Karate Kid and On the Waterfront shown at venues including Bryant Park, Coney Island, Bronx Terminal Market and Socrates Sculpture Park.

2.Dock in

Regent Porto Montenegro opens its doors on Friday. The five-storey hotel overlooks a glitzy marina near Tivat. The look is of an upmarket Italianate palazzo, with a terracotta-tiled roof, grand rooms and four restaurants encased within.

3. Star gazers

Budding astronomers should make for the Ritz-Carlton Abama in Tenerife from 22-27 September, where the Starmus Festival will welcome Stephen Hawking as its keynote speaker, alongside Richard Dawkins and Brian May. Tickets start at €300, excluding flights and accommodation.

4. Great Danes

Food lovers looking for their next fix might find Copenhagen Cooking appealing. From 22-31 August, Demark's capital will be transformed with 100 foodie events, such as The Wild Festival, which celebrates foraging in the Amager Faelled nature reserve (30 August; free), to the black-tie dinner party at the Madklubben's pop-up restaurant (27-28 August; DK700/£75).

5. Strait talk

On 1 September, luxury hotel brand Raffles opens an outpost in Istanbul. The hotel is set within the new Zorlu Center, made up of a shopping mall, office space and more. Rooms will have views across the Bosphorus Strait with the brand's signature butler service and sumptous interiors.

6. South beach

Bookings are now open for Bougainvillea, a two-bedroom self-catering property in Kerala. Opening on 1 October in the village of Mararikulam, it features sea-facing rooms and a private courtyard garden. From INR18,000 (£176) per night.

7. Dine out

Journey Latin America's new "Taste of Mexico" tour goes on sale from Monday. The 14-day trip focuses on Mexico's distinctive cuisine, with chef-guided tours, visits to markets, cooking classes and the chance to visit local producers before finishing on the Caribbean coast. From £3,490 with flights.

8. Early birds

James Villas has announced an early-booking deal for 2015. Travellers who book a villa with flights by 31 October for holidays taken between 1 January and 31 December 2015 will receive free car hire for their trip, plus airport parking and a welcome grocery pack on arrival. The company offers a selection of European properties from Croatia to Cyprus, Gozo to Greece.
