How to follow Santa's travels this year

Children wanting to track Santa as he delivers presents around the world will be able to do from telephones, computers and even cars this year.

The annual NORAD Tracks Santa project provides location updates of Santa and his sleigh on Christmas Eve and the early hours of Christmas Day, courtesy of North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD).

The tradition of tracking Santa began 54 years ago and has since evolved to use high-tech tools such as Google Maps to display the location.

By logging onto www.noradsanta.org, children can display the real-time location of Santa, with radar maps and streaming "SantaCam" video images from cities along the journey - the information is available in English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Spanish and Chinese.

Children will also be able to call 1-877-HI-NORAD (+1 719-556-5211 internationally) to speak to an operative who can tell them exactly where Santa is when the project goes live on Christmas Eve.

General Motors also confirmed last week that OnStar subscribers will be able to push the OnStar button on their car to request a "Santa Update", from 6.00AM EST on Christmas Eve until 5.00AM EST Christmas morning.

NORAD said that in 2009 more than 13 million visitors from 231 countries tracked Santa online, with a further 74,000 calling the NORAD Tracks Santa Operations Center at Peterson Air Force base.
