How to improve holidays with children

By Katy Holland

Did you know it's virtually impossible to get a babysitter in Spain? Not because there isn't anyone there who'd be willing to have your kids, but, shocking though it may be, people take their children everywhere. What's more, they are positively welcomed.

This may be an alien concept for us Brits, but it certainly makes Spain a stress-free destination when you've got little ones in tow, and it's no wonder that my elder son lists it as one of his favourite countries. OK, the fact that David Beckham lives there makes it kind of cool. But what my son says he likes most about the country is "all the nice people" - which, roughly translated, means he got more free lollipops than anywhere else he's ever been.

Here's another shock for you: Spain doesn't mean a tower block on the Costa del Sol. Ten minutes off the beaten track you'll find five-star villas, hilltop hideaways and historic paradores galore - most of them child-friendly.

A fine example is the Jarandilla de la Vera, a 15th-century castle converted into a palace for Emperor Charles V. Tucked in the hills in Caceres, it has its own playground, pools and tennis courts (020-7486 8077; www.tourspain.co.uk).

To escape the crowds, stay in a cortijo (an original farmhouse) in south-western Spain with Responsible Travel. Swim, go riding, even feed the pigs if you feel inclined (0870 0052836; www.responsibletravel.com).

True fans of peace and quiet will also be interested in the "alternative " accommodation at Casas Karen in Andalucia, which includes a choza, a traditional house made of string and straw, but with all mod cons (00 34 956 437 067; www.casaskaren.com).

If you're up for splashing out, there are posh villas aplenty, such as Casa Gandolfo, which comes with its own cook and maid service (0870 6060802; www.cvtravel.co.uk). Just looking at the picture makes me want to go - right now. But perhaps a break without the kids might be more relaxing, just this once. Anyone know a good babysitter?

Katy's top tip

If you're planning a family get-together, check out the Casa Miralles, a huge stone mansion in the hills of Catalonia. It has 11 bedrooms and bathrooms, a games room, a pool and 200 acres of private woodland (0845-344 0420; www.vintagetravel.co.uk).
