Lisbon still reigns with world's best hostels

Portuguese capital Lisbon has again been confirmed as the world's best city for budget backpackers' accommodation, winning all three top spots in an annual ranking of the world's youth hostels.

The 9th annual Hoscar Awards, which recognize the world's best budget accommodation options, saw Travellers House and Lisbon Lounge, both in Lisbon, named best large and small hostel respectively on February 4.

In addition to topping both lists, Lisbon was home to both the second- and third-placed large hostels (Living Lounge Hostel and Yes! Lisbon Hostel) and the second-placed small hostel (Rossio Hostel).

The award for the best hostel for group travelers went to the Naughty Squirrel Backpackers Hostel in Riga, Latvia, topping a successful year for Eastern Europe which saw three hotels being voted into the two categories.

The Wombats City Hotel - The Base in Vienna, Austria, was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award, with the award organizers saying that its model of "hotel and youth hostel convergence," which includes a bar, private bathrooms for each dorm and funky designs, "has been the blueprint on which many of today's most popular hostels are modelled."

The awards, which were presented by hostel booking site on the basis of six categories (fun, cleanliness, staff, security, location and character), were compiled using the reviews of over 1 million customers who stayed last year.
