Looking up - major air shows in 2011

Next year's most promising air shows include the return of biennial exhibitions such as Aero India, Avalon in Australia and the Seoul Air Show, as well as annual stalwarts such as Oshkosh, Tannkosh and the Royal International Air Tattoo.

Aero India is the largest aviation show in Asia and returns in 2011 with more space and more exhibits planned. In 2009, flight shows were held twice daily and featured aircraft from India and around the world. The public days will be February 12 and 13.

59th EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2011

July 25-31
Oshkosh, WI, United States

Dubbed the "World's Greatest Aviation Celebration," EAA's AirVenture far outstrips any other airshow on the planet in terms of scale. Over half a million visitors descend on Oshkosh Airfield in Wisconsin for the event, which showcases over 10,000 aircraft both on the ground and in the air, with aerobatic and pyrotechnic displays. Many visitors fly in to the airfield, which is the busiest airport in the world for the duration of the event.

49th Abbotsford International Airshow

August 12-14
Abbotsford, BC, Canada

Abbotsford is the largest airshow in Canada, featuring aerobatic teams from Canada, the US and further afield. As well as the daily air displays, there is an extensive selection of ground exhibits - last year saw a Tactical Assault demonstration by the Canadian Armed Forces.

27th Tannkosh (2011)

August 26-28
Tannheim, Germany

Europe's answer to EAA's AirVenture doesn't share the scale but it does share the enthusiasm - the show welcomes hundreds of aircraft flying in from all over Europe. After a washout in 2010, organisers hope for more attendees and visitors in 2011.

The biennial Seoul Air Show is one of the largest events held in Asia and caters to both trade and public visitors. Over 300,000 attendees came to the show in 2009 to see everything from new weaponry to new passenger jets. The public exhibition is likely to be held over the weekend, October 22-23.
