The Independent Traveller and Wanderlust magazine have once again teamed up to present the Travel Photo of the Year competition. The top prizes are photo commissions to Colombia, while runners-up will receive Nikon camera equipment. And entrants get the chance to see their shots printed in The Independent Traveller and Wanderlust.

The prizes

There are four amateur categories: People, Wildlife, Landscape and Travel Icons – shots of places, events and people that have iconic visual status in the world of travel.

Entries can be taken anywhere in the world. The winner of each category, plus a companion, will receive a photo commission to Colombia with a brief to capture the wonders of this dramatic country. The prize is courtesy of Proexport Colombia – the Colombia Tourist office (www.colombia.travel/en). Runners-up will win a Nikon D3100 camera worth £579, and any highly commended shots will win the photographer a Nikon COOLPIXS9100 camera worth £299.

In addition, a Portfolio category is open to amateur and professional photographers, with a top prize of £3,000 and a second prize of a Nikon D3100 camera. Entrants must assemble five images, all themed to fit one of the four amateur categories.

All shortlisted photographs will be exhibited at "Destinations: The Holiday & Travel Show 2012" in Manchester and London. For more information, visit destinationsshow.com.
