Serbia allows EU citizens to transit without a passport
Friday 28 May 2010
This summer Serbia will allow European Union citizens without a passport but in possession of a valid identity card to travel through Serbia, Serb Prime Minister Mirko Cvetkovic announced Friday.
"The government mulled this question and decided to allow EU citizens to transit with a simple ID card" during the tourist season, Cvetkovic told a press conference.
Serbia is a main transit point for tourists from Western Europe who travel by car or bus to Greece and Turkey.
In mid-April Belgrade had already allowed EU citizens to transit with only an ID card after ash clouds from an Icelandic volcano disturbed air traffic through out Europe.
Within the continental countries of the European Union citizens of member countries can travel on just an ID card. Turkey also allows citizens of a number of EU countries to enter with only an ID card.
