2. Everest issues

A panel of top mountaineers is to discuss the events that led to the deaths of 16 Sherpas on Everest in April, and what the tragedy may mean for the future of Himalayan climbing. The event, entitled "Everest's deadliest day," takes place at 7pm on 9 October at the Royal Geographical Society in London. Panellists include Rebecca Stephens, the first British woman to summit the world's highest mountain.

4. Lava lodge

On 29 September, a new hotel opens on the island of Santa Cruz in the Galapagos – on the crater of an extinct volcano. Pikaia Lodge, 450m above sea level, claims to be the archipelago's first carbon-neutral accommodation. It boasts a pool, bar, spa and a "giant tortoise reserve".

5. Now landing

Brisbane West Wellcamp, Australia's first new airport for 50 years starts scheduled services on 17 November. The Queensland airport, outside the city of Toowoomba, will have 12 flights a week to and from Sydney with Qantas, and is likely to supersede the existing Toowoomba municipal airport.

6. NYC for less

Half-term for many schools is the week beginning 25 October, and air fares to a wide range of destinations at the start and end of the holiday are already high. But for anyone heading for New York for a week, Norwegian still has space available on 25 October on its Gatwick-JFK link at £600 return - compared with £824 on the same dates on BA from Heathrow (though that fare includes meals and baggage).

7. Flight strike

Air France pilots are threatening to strike from 15 to 22 September. The airline says the likely effects of any stoppage are not yet clear. Any passenger booked to travel during that week can amend dates or cancel and receive a voucher for future travel.

8. Fuji fast track

For the next three weekends, passengers arriving at Tokyo's Narita airport will be able to board a train direct to Mount Fuji's rail station, Kawaguchiko. The 9.19am departure from Terminal 2 dovetails with the arrival of Virgin Atlantic's flight from Heathrow. The 3h30m journey costs Y7,000 (£41).
