Summer Guide 2013: Roads

Set a gentle pace on the highways of Mid-Wales in an electric car with Welsh Road Trips (welshroadtrips.com), an initiative by three hotels in the Green Tourism Business Scheme. Guests are given directions between the three properties, with two nights' B&B provided at each establishment – Lasswade Country House in Llanwrtyd Wells, The Old Vicarage Dolfor near Newtown, and Westview Guesthouse in Llowes. Price £595pp, including hire of a two-seat electric car.

Get on the open road in Bosnia-Herzegovina with a new guided minibus tour of the country now available from Balkan Road Trip (0845 257 8289; balkanroadtrip.com). The five-day journey goes from Dubrovnik in Croatia to Sarajevo, with stops including the Kravica waterfall, Mostar and Konjic. Finally, guests discover the history of the Yugoslav wars of the 1990s, with visits to Srebrenica and the Tunnel Museum in Sarajevo. Price £249pp, based on two sharing, including B&B in hostels. Flights extra.

Explore Montenegro on a fortnight's driving tour with Untravelled Paths (0871 662 9521; untravelledpaths.com). Highlights include the Biogradska Gora National Park and the Moraca monastery, the Tara Canyon, Kotor, Budva and the Lovcen National Park and Podgorica. Price €1,250 (£1,058) pp, based on two sharing, including B&B and car hire. Shorter seven- and 10-day itineraries are also available at €650 (£550) and €990 (£840). Flights are extra.

The adventure company, Explore, has a tour operation for 18- to 30-somethings, Edge Adventures (0844 225 3135; edgeadventures.com). The new "Coast-to-Coast Road Trip Eastbound" is a 23-day drive across the US from San Francisco to New York City. From £1,799, including accommodation in a mix of hostels, hotels and camping, entrance fees and a guide. International travel is not included.
