Light fantastic

Berlin will be illuminated from 9-20 October during the Festival of Lights, when 70 of the German capital's buildings and landmarks will be bathed in multi-coloured lights from 7-11pm each night (festival-of-lights.de).

Fair way

Wild show

The UK's largest wildlife photography event, WildPhotos, takes place at the Royal Geographical Society on 12 and 13 October, with talks and workshops by professional snappers such as David Tipling; day tickets £115 (wildphotos.org.uk).

A new luxury resort opens in Ethiopia's Harenna forest next month. The 30-room Bale Mountain Lodge offers excellent wildlife-viewing of endemic species such as Bale monkeys and Ethiopian wolves (balemountainlodge.com).

Food for thought

A new book by food-writer Colman Andrews takes you on a culinary journey around the US, featuring 250 delicious dishes from Maine lobster to Key Lime Pie and the humble hotdog. Published on 14 October by Phaidon, The Taste of America costs £24.95 (uk.phaidon.com).
