Travel Agenda: Crossings to France; Edinburgh to Oban; Greece strike; National Parks Week; Barclays Cycle Hire scheme; Ryanair
Saturday 24 July 2010
Today: Expect crowds en route to Dover, with crossings to France in great demand. SeaFrance says today is likely to be the busiest day of the year for outbound sailings to Calais, with the first seven sailings of the day all heavily booked. P&O Ferries concurs that today is likely to be the busiest day of the year outbound to Calais. LD Lines ferries to Boulogne are busy all weekend, but all these operators have capacity available on some sailings – as does Norfolkline from Dover to Dunkirk.
This week: A summer Sundays service from Edinburgh direct to Oban starts tomorrow, taking four hours and allowing five hours' stay in the West Highland resort. Standard returns are £30, bookable only through the telesales team on 08457 55 00 33 ( scotrail.co.uk ).
Air-traffic controllers in Greece are working to rule, with the possibility of a 24-hour strike on Sunday. On Monday, National Parks Week gets under way in the UK ( nationalparks.gov.uk ). And in London on Friday, the Barclays Cycle Hire scheme gets into gear; the first "rent it here, leave it there" customers are those who pre-register online ( tfl.gov.uk ). It launches fully in August.
In the diary: Competition to southern Spain steps up this winter with Ryanair announcing a base in the city of Seville, with flights promised from Gatwick starting in November, in addition to the existing Stansted service.
