Today: Visit the National Museum of Scotland, which has opened its doors in Edinburgh. After a £47.4m transformation, the listed Victorian building comprises a Discoveries gallery, presenting great Scots, from John Logie Baird to John Muir, as well as exhibits on the natural world, world cultures and dedicated Scottish galleries (nms.ac.uk).

This week: The final chapter may have closed on Harry Potter, but at the Universal Orlando Resort, the wizard lives on with a special "Celebration of the Harry Potter Films" weekend. From 11-13 November, cast and filmmakers will attend The Wizarding World of Harry Potter for Q&A sessions, signings, screenings and a host of Pottery events. Event packages go on sale tomorrow through Virgin Holidays (celebration.virginholidays.co.uk).

In Polynesia, the Maitai Lapita Village opens in Huahine on Monday. The small-scale resort is set amid gardens and between a lake and the idyllic beach (tahiti-tourisme.co.uk).

In the diary: See out the summer festival season in Ramsbottom, where the eponymous event takes place at the Cricket Club from 16-18 September. The line-up includes the Guillemots, Young Knives and Mark Radcliffe (ramsbottomfestival.com).
