The Brighton Festival begins, this year guest-directed by Anish Kapoor. Highlights include music from Antony and the Johnsons; until 24 May ( ). More festivities are to be had at Eat!, Newcastle Gateshead. Quirkier events at this 16-day food festival include a Mad Hatter's Tea Party, which will see a 100m tea table set up across the River Tyne ( ).

Air Arabia Maroc, a new Moroccan low-cost carrier, inaugurates its first flight, from Casablanca to Stansted on Wednesday ( ). Further north, the Floralies flower show in Nantes celebrates its 10th anniversary on Friday. Held every five years, it brings together top horticulturalists and visitors in their droves ( ).
