Walk the line
The Hay on Wye walking festival strides forth from this Thursday (until 15 October), with more than 50 guided walks snaking through spectacular scenery, from the Brecon Beacons and Black Mountains (pictured) to Offa's Dyke and the Wye Valley. There are also evening events that include a ceilidh with folk music and dancing at the Swan at Hay Hotel and there's a pub quiz at Kilvert's. Walks and events range from £5 to £12 (haywalking.org).

Mombasa in Kenya and Kilimanjaro in Tanzania become more accessible from 4 December when Turkish Airlines starts flights from its Istanbul hub (turkishairlines.com).

Sail on in luxury
Alila Hotels has a luxury take on the phinisi two-masted Indonesian ships. Alila Purnama sleeps 10 and first departs Raja Ampat, West Papua Province, on 10 December (alilahotels.com).
