Travel Photographer of the Year named
Show all 71This year’s international Travel Photographer of the Year gong has been awarded to Louis Montrose from California for his images of a painted village in Burkino Faso and the day of the dead festival in Mexico.
Photographers from 90 different countries submitted thousands of images for this year’s contest. They were whittled down to entrants from 33 countries and a total of 20 photographers scooped individual category awards.
The winning images will be exhibited at the Royal Geographical Society in London next summer.
From a Beluga whale beneath sheets of ice, the mysterious beauty of sand dunes in America’s Death Valley, and abseiling down a thundering 225-metre waterfall, to vibrant Senegal streetlife, this year’s Travel Photographer of the Year winning images give a fascinating view of life, culture and nature around the globe.
The Young Travel Photographer of the Year award went to 17 year-old German photographer Arne Hansen for his portfolio depicting the physical impact of travel on nature. Britain’s Joel Biddle, 17, took the honours in Young TPOTY 15-18, and also won a special talent award for his intriguing abstract images on the theme of ‘green’.
