Large Western chains made up three of the top five this week, with Hilton, Holiday Inn and Park Plaza all making an appearance.

Overall rates at NYC's top five hotels were considerably cheaper than Paris or London, but guests reported no decline in luxury. The hotel reopened in October after a $60 million refurbishment.

It edged out Chuo's Park Prince Tower by only one percentage point though, with the famous Park Hyatt, scene of hit movie Lost in Translation, the third most popular overall. Guests praised the Mandarin Oriental's "impeccable Asian design" and customer service touches such as pre-printed laundry bags and specific electrical adaptors provided in the room before arrival.
