The Independent Travel Podcast Service: Jersey

Welcome to The Independent’s Travel Podcast Service, which is designed to give you an insider's guide to destinations all over the world. You join our travel editor, Simon Calder, who always knows where to stay, where to eat and what to do in destinations at home and abroad.

The Independent's Travel Podcast Service is recorded to the highest broadcast standards and the guides are free to download. This time, Simon visits Jersey in the Channel Islands. Here are some of the highlights:

Simon starts his visit in the island’s north-west corner, overlooking Plémont’s lovely beach, and walks 13 miles east to the small fishing harbour of Rozel, meeting locals and tourists along the way. The trek isn’t always easy but the rugged, beautiful scenery and sense of isolation make it worthwhile.

The next day, he’s exploring the island’s World War II history with the help of local experts. The Channel Islands were, of course, the only part of the UK to be occupied by German forces. Simon visits the trenches, tunnels and buildings built for the Germans by slaves and pays tribute to their sacrifice.

It’s then on to the island’s capital, St Helier, which has changed beyond recognition in the 20 years since Simon last visited. Now full of life and with great shops and restaurants, St Helier is an exciting place to be. Simon ends his visit by kayaking to a 1781 defence tower, in true Action Man style.
