SUE JENNINGS of Kent spent pounds 200 at Sainsbury's in order to take advantage of its offer for 30 per cent off British Airways flights. When she wanted to book a flight for four people to Nice she discovered that with the offer the fare would be pounds 164.50.

To make a comparison she checked with Trailfinders and discovered that it was offering a seat on the same BA flight for pounds 150. She complained to Sainsbury's, which replied that when it set up the promotion 'we did not say that we would be offering the cheapest flights.'

By way of apology, however, Sainsbury's sent Ms Jennings shopping vouchers worth pounds 60.
