IF THE swimming pool at Clos Mistinguett in the French Chapters 'Simply Provence' brochure looks familiar, it should. This is the pool beside which the Duchess of York had her foot caressed last summer by her financial adviser, John Bryan. French Chapters (071-722 9560) is too discreet to refer to that in the brochure, but it does claim that the converted 19th-century farmhouse is 'surrounded by vineyards, and ideal for those looking for total escapism in a peaceful and tranquil setting'. A week at this handsome Provencal house, which sleeps up to 10 people, costs from pounds 2,500 to pounds 4,480, depending on season.

For your money you get a 15 x 7 metre swimming pool (as seen in tabloid newspaper pictures) and a separate children's paddling pool. There is a paved patio and an upstairs terrace which are said to offer spectacular views across the valley.

Clos Mistinguett is just one of 100 properties featured in the brochure, and by no means the most expensive: the Chateau Garibondy, set in 12 acres of gardens near the centre of Cannes, costs from pounds 11,500 to pounds 15,950 a week. You can, however, share the costs with up to 15 other people. And you will be pleased to know that five telephones and one fax machine are included in the chateau's rent.
