Travel: Unsung Resorts: Between Flims and Laax

FLIMS is very much the senior partner in the huge, spacious, sunny ski area it shares with Laax. But the Laax side of the ski area has more to offer most skiers with splendid, long runs both at the top (from 3,000m) and bottom. Wherever you stay in this area, you are likely to face a choice between convenience and charm; and for the ultimate in either, you are better off in Laax than Flims. For convenience, stay not in Laax itself, but in a smart modern hotel by the cable-car in the skiers' satellite village of Murschetg. At Crap Sogn Gion, 1,100m up the mountain at the top of the cable car, there is another smart, modern hotel. For charm, stay in the old Posta Veglia in friendly Laax itself, a short drive from the lifts. For a compromise, try the farming hamlet of Falera, where there are simple hotels with a chairlift close by.
