Whether wrapped up on a cold autumnal day for a walk in the country or strolling through a city park, autumn offers the spectator, young or old, a whole spectrum of opportunities to be closer to nature

Whether walking in the country on a crisp autumnal day or strolling through a city park, this season showcases nature at its best

Dense piles of copper-tinted leaves in the park, the smell of hot chestnuts, conkers, soggy raincoats and warm scarves... it’s that time of year again.

Take an early morning walk in any park and you'll see mist, frost and dewdrops sparkling like diamonds. Bejewelled leaves and spiders’ webs create a natural wonder that is specific to autumn.

Babies, clad in hats and gloves and cloaked in layers of blankets, hibernate in their warm pushchairs, while adults invest in the new season’s coats, jackets and umbrellas. In the towns and cities, a perennial favourite of women makes a return: sheepskin boots are just the ticket to combat the British autumn’s chill.

Shops are stocked full of pumpkin chocolate balls and witch costumes. Festival time is upon us as Halloween and then Bonfire Night approach. Across the pond, America celebrates the traditional harvest festival of Thanksgiving. Toffee apples, pumpkin soup - recycled from carved Halloween lanterns - and corn on the cob; all are seasonal delights to indulge in this autumn.

As the season draws to a close in late November, we have many winter treats to look forward to; country pubs with crackling log fires, mulled wine, the Christmas lights and markets...

For now though, let’s all take a bite out of autumn’s glorious fruits.
