Eshott Hall Cottages, Northumberland

Garden and Stable West Cottage are set in the grounds of a 17th-century country house. They feature high-spec décor, luxurious fabrics and sea-grass matting, all in creamy hues. The buildings are tucked into mature woodland – home to protected red squirrels and deer – and there is a private courtyard plus acres of land to explore, as well as a tennis court within a Victorian walled garden. LTA-approved coaching can be booked.

Eshott Hall, Morpeth, Northumberland NE65 9EN (01670 787777; eshottholidaycottages.co.uk). Weekly rental starts at £350 for five guests or £450 for six.

Plum Braes Barns, Scottish Borders

The three cottages at Plum Braes Barn are in a stone house on an organic farm. Wood-burning stoves and polished sleigh beds create a country-cosy charm inside, while private decks with barbecues are ideal for summer evenings. Guests have shared use of a picturesque all-weather tennis court, which is surrounded by wild flowers and farmland, and have the option of booking private coaching. After thrashing it out on the court, players can take a walk on the farm or picnic down by the river.

Plum Braes Barns, Cliftonhill, Ednam, Kelso, Scotland TD5 7QE (01573 225028; kelsocottages.co.uk). Weekly rental starts at £260 for two guests or £320 for four.

Park Gate Cottages, Devon

The four cottages on Park Gate Farm, near the north Devon coast, are bright and airy with pine furniture, cast-iron beds and floral fabrics. Each has a sitting room that opens up on to a private deck and garden. They share use of an all-weather tennis court, with sweeping country views.

Park Gate Farm, Tawstock, Barnstaple EX31 3HZ (01271 325707; parkgatecottages.co. uk). Weekly rental starts at £382 for six guests or £862 for 12.

Hoste Barn, Norfolk

This luxurious conversion of a 16th-century threshing barn features a vaulted ceiling, heated floors and a hi-tech entertainment system. Floor-to-ceiling windows, a mezzanine bedroom and an oval fireplace keep things contemporary inside; outside there is an all-weather tennis court. A good base to explore the North Norfolk coast and Broads.

Hoste Barn, Old Manor Farmhouse, Swanton Hill, Norfolk NR10 5EA (01692 538224; hostebarn.com). Weekly rental starts at £646; sleeps four.

Upper Mowley, Herefordshire

This gracious farmhouse is surrounded by rolling fields and former farm buildings that have been cannily converted into games rooms, including one with a weather-defying full-size tennis court. In the main house, rooms are decked out with polished wooden floorboards, Shaker-style furniture and wood-burning stoves. The house is well-placed for visiting Offa's Dyke, Ludlow and Hay-on-Wye, and there's an award-winning pub nearby.

Upper Mowley, Titley, Kington, Herefordshire HR5 3RT (bookings through ruralretreats.co.uk; 01386 701177). Weekly rental starts at £1,946 including welcome hamper; sleeps 16.
