Water of Leith, Edinburgh
The Water of Leith Walkway is a bosky 12-mile trail that follows the river as it snakes through the Scottish capital. It's easy to dip in and out - just look for the brown signposts. The 2.5-mile Stockbridge to Leith leg is a lovely riverbank ramble. From the bridge (check out the Antony Gormley statue standing sentinel in the water), meander past the Colonies, pretty workers' cottages, to the revamped docklands at Leith for a gastro-pub lunch.
Distance 2.5 miles
