Atholl Estates, Perthshire
Tramp up into the heather-clad hills of the Atholl Estates, 145,000 acres of woodland and rough moorland threaded with over 30 miles of waymarked trails. Ranging from a one-mile ramble to a 10-mile hike, all the routes are circular. The one-mile Red Squirrel Walk takes you through low-lying woods while the Glen Tilt Trail (yellow waymarkers) is a 10-mile schlep into the hills. Keep an eye out for mountain hare, red grouse and golden eagles soaring above you. Finish with a slap-up tea in the old watermill in the village of Blair Atholl.
